Parashat Tazria-Metzora What does it mean to be pure?

Saturday, April 18, 2026

Parashat Tazria–Metzora invites us to reflect on the profound and often misunderstood concepts of purity (taharah) and impurity (tumah).

These categories are not about hygiene or moral worth, but about spiritual states connected to life and death, presence and absence. Moments such as childbirth, illness, or physical afflictions place a person in a state of tumah, not as a punishment, but as a recognition of encountering the fragile boundaries of life itself.

The Torah responds not with rejection, but with a path back—through awareness, time, and ritual—guiding a person toward reintegration and renewed connection. In this way, purity and impurity become a spiritual language, teaching us to honor the rhythms of the human condition and to recognize that holiness is found not in perfection, but in the journey back toward wholeness.

Shabbat Shalom, and I look forward to seeing you there,

Rabbi Gadi Capela
