“Vayakhel” means “gathering.” Moses assembles the People of Israel after the completion of the Mishkan—the Tent of Meeting—the first form of the Temple, the sanctuary of God among the people. Now that the Mishkan and all its components are finished and brought to Moses, he erects it and anoints it with the sacred anointing oil.

At this moment, Moses reiterates the importance of observing Shabbat. Just as the Tent of Meeting is a sanctuary in place, Shabbat is a sanctuary in time. In both, the entire congregation can come together in holiness.

Then a cloud appears over the Mishkan, signifying the Shekhinah—the Divine Presence that has come to dwell among the people.

Join us as we explore these ideas this Shabbat.

Shabbat Shalom!

Rabbi Gadi
